Fayetteville State names Bill Carver as athletics director

Fayetteville State University has named William J. "Bill" Carver as its new Director of Athletics. Carver, a former Student Activities Director for the Cumberland County (NC) School System was introduced by FSU Chancellor Willis McLeod at a Tuesday morning press conference.

Carver comes to Fayetteville State University with 22 years of athletic and administrative experience. Much of his experience came at E.E. Smith High School, his alma mater, where he coached football, basketball, baseball, track and golf in addition to being an assistant principal and athletic director.

Since his retirement in 1999, Carver has been actively involved with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) nominating committee serving as its chairperson and as a neutral observer for football and basketball officials in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) where he officiated for 20 years. He began his officiating career working local high school games and was president of the Southeastern Athletic Official's Association.

In 1991 Carver moved to the Central Office as Director of Student Activities for Cumberland County Schools where he was responsible for 12 middle schools and 8 high schools' athletic programs, many that were host to state, sectional, regional and state play-offs for the NCHSAA.

Carver was inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame in 1998. His other accomplishments include being awarded the National Intercollegiate Athletic Administration Association (NIAAA) State Award of Merit in 1998, the NCHSAA State Award of Merit in 1996 and the NCHSAA Distinguished Service Award in 1995. In addition, he was named Region 4 Athletic Director of the Year in 1994 and the North Carolina Athletic Director of the Year in 1997. In 1999, he received the NIAAA Distinguished Service Award at the National Convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Carver received his Batchelor of Science Degree from Hampton University where he played football and baseball and his Master of Arts in Education Administration and Supervision from Fayetteville State University. He did additional graduate study at East Carolina University and Indiana University. Carver is also a National Certified Athletic Administrator.

He is married to the former Inez McEachern, a retired school teacher. They have one son and two grandchildren.
