| Howard Names Frankie Allen As Head Men's Basketball CoachMay 5, 2000Howard University has named Frankie Allen as the head men's basketball coach.
Allen brings a wealth of experience to the position having coached at Tennessee State University from 1991 until thispast season. During his stint there, Allen compiled an impressive 80-70 record in the Ohio Valley Conference, winningthe regular season championship three times and twice leading the Tigers to the NCAA tournament in 1993 and 1994. "I am excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach here at Howard," said Allen. "I envison Howard Universitybasketball being competitive. I took forward to the challenge of getting this program back on the winning track." Prior to his coaching stint at Tennessee State, Allen served as head coach at Virginia Tech from 1987-91 and wasnamed Metro Conference and national rookie coach of the year in 1987-88. Allen also served as assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 1976-87 and helped the Gobblers post eight, 20-winseasons, four NCAA Regional Tournament appearances and four NIT invitations. Allen was the head coach of the South team that won tile bronze medal during the 1995 United States OlympicFestival. Allen, 51, is a native of Charlottesville, VA and received his bachelor of arts degree in philosophy from RoanokeCollege in 1971. Allen and his wife Cynthia, a Washington, DC native, have two daughters, Talhia and Ashley.
