Carson stepped aside as the Tiger's head coach in May because of health reasons. He underwent surgery in April. He had served as head coach since 1992 and the team had dedicated their 1999 season to him.

As head coach, Carson compiled a 54-25-1 career record while winning two Southwestern Athletic Conference championships (1995 and 1996). His teams also made three trips to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. His best season was 1996 when the Tigers finished the year with a 10-2 record.

A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Carson was a 1963 graduate of Jackson State. He lettered four years as an offensive guard and nose guard for the Tigers, receiving honorable mention NAIA All America honors in 1962. He was inducted into the JSU Sports Hall of Fame in 1989.
