Fayetteville State University's Schavonne Brown has been named recipient of the inaugural Lady Speedstick Sportswoman of the Year Award. The award is given "for outstanding achievement in athletics, academics and for actively embracing the community and civic needs".
At FSU Brown was a multi-year starter on both the volleyball and basketball teams. She led her 1996 volleyball team to a CIAA Championship, was selected to the All-Tournament Team and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. She is a December, 1999 Magna Cum Laude graduate.
The award will be presented at the second annual Street & Smith's Eddie Robinson Award Dinner Friday, December 17, 1999 at the Hilton Atlanta Towers in Atlanta, GA. Phyllis Wooley, Director of African-American Marketing for Colgate-Palmolive, will present the award to Brown.
The gala affair is part of a weekend for Black College Football in Atlanta that will also feature the playing of McDonald's Heritage Bowl IX and the Pioneer Bowl. The double header takes place Saturday, December 18 at the Georgia Dome.
"Schavonne is a very worthy recipient of this award because of the leadership role she plays in everyday life and is a positive influence with all those she met," said Horace Small, FSU Director of Athletics.
Now in its 59th year of publishing sports annuals, Street & Smith's is a division of Advance Publications. Last year, the company added Street & Smith's Black College Football to its stable of sports publications. The relationship with Colgate Palmolive Company represents an expansion of Street and Smith's sponsorship acquisition activity.
No announcement was made regarding whether the award included any scholarship funds for Fayetteville State.
