Clemson, SC - Mike Waitre scored 26 points and James Jones added 17 to lead South Carolina State to a 71-68 victory over Clemson before 8,000 shocked fans in Littlejohn Coliseum.
"I think our guys executed and played very well for the entire 40 minutes", said SCSU head coach Cy Alexander. "I'm glad something positive turned out for this team."
The Bulldogs led 34-24 at the half and canned 14 of 16 free throws down the stretch to take the win.
"State out-scrapped and out-played us the whole game", said Clemson coach Larry Shyatt. "They made the big shots at the end and they made their clutch free throws."
The Bulldogs improve to 2-4 on the season while Clemson falls to 3-5.
"I think this win will give us some national respect that we need", noted Alexander in his post game comments. "This will hopefully show the young men out there that they can come to a mid, upper division team and be able to compete and win against upper division teams.
