February 11, 2000

BIRMINGHAM -- The Southwestern Athletic Conference, in conjunction with Prairie View A&M University, has postponed several athletic events involving the university that were scheduled for this weekend. The action comes as a result of a traffic accident involving the university's men's indoor track and field team on Thursday.

Rudy Washington, commissioner of the SWAC, and Charles Hines, Prairie View A&M's president, mutually agreed upon the postponement of events involving Prairie View A&M's basketball, bowling and baseball teams for Friday, February 11 through Monday, February 14. The postponements include scheduled men's and women's basketball games at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on February 12 and at Mississippi Valley State on February 14. Also postponed are a bowling match at Grambling State on February 12 as well as baseball games versus Wiley on February 11, Paul Quinn on February 12 and Huston-Tillotson on February 13.

Washington said the accident, which claimed the lives of four Prairie View A&M student- athletes, is a tragedy which affects everyone in the 10-member conference.

"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy," stated Washington. "Our prayers are extended to the families of those killed and injured. We ask everyone to support Prairie View A&M as the university tries to cope with this situation."
