UMES Awarded CoSIDA Grant

June 28, 2000

St. Louis - The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore sports information office has been awarded a grant from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) to fund an undergraduate internship at the school. The $2,500 grant is designed to assist undermanned offices is getting staffing help. UMES was one of three schools to receive the undergraduate award this year.

"We're very happy to get the award," said UMES SID Romanda Noble. "The money will help me reward a student who will be working in our office beginning this fall." Ayana Malachi, a senior English-Communications major, will serve in the internship position.

CoSIDA began the program last year in an attempt to address staffing needs at many of its member institution sports information offices. Schools like UMES, while responsible for several - often overlapping - sports, only have one full-time person on staff. The award is designed to help convince athletic administrators that additional staffing support for sports information offices can provide benefits for the school. Schools who receive the grant are prohibited from reapplying for a period of three years.

UMES is the second HBCU to earn an award since the program began. Fayetteville State received a grant last year.
