| Four HBCU products earn Olympic spotsJuly 17, 2000Four black college products have earned spots on the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. Alabama A&M's Jearl Miles-Clark qualified for her third Olympic Games. St. Augustine's Antonio Pettigrew, Jerome Young and Norfolk State's Brian Lewis will be making their first trip. By finishing second in the women's 400 meter run during the track and field trials in Sacramento California, Miles-Clark assured herself of a trip to Sydney where she should participate in two events. She was a member of the gold medal 4X400 meter relay team and finished fifth in the 400 meter run in 1996. In 1992, Miles-Clark ran on the U.S. silver medal 4X400 meter relay team. Pettigrew will be making his first trip to the Olympics. The former world 400 meter and two-time 4X400M relay champion may be best remembered as a member of the relay team that set the current world record in the Goodwill Games in 1998. Young's fourth place finish in the 400M finals puts him on the 4X400M relay team with Pettigrew and gives St. Aug half of the spots on the team. Young was also a member of the relay team that broke the world record two years ago. Lewis, who finished fourth in the 100M dash will run as a part of the 4X100M relay team. He was a member of the 1999 World Outdoor Championship relay team in that same event. Other HBCU products who reached the finals in their events but failed to qualify for the team include St. Augustine's Adriane Sims (high jump) and Ken Brockenburr (100m) and Norfolk State's Tim Montgomery (100m).
