St. Aug's, Shaw take top CIAA honors

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association presented Shaw University with the Loretta Taylor Women's All-Sports Trophy and Saint Augustine's College with the C.H. Williams Men's All-Sports Trophy at its annual Award's Luncheon last week.

Shaw comes back to take the women's honor after breaking Virginia State's four-year win streak in 2003. Shaw won women's championships this year in basketball, bowling and tennis.

Saint Augustine's men took home championship titles this year in outdoor and indoor track and field. Those two championships, along with an exceptional finish in cross country placed them in position for recognition.

The Loretta Taylor All-Sports Women's Trophy and the C.H. Williams All-Sports Men's Trophy are determined by a point system established to award an institution for achievement in each of their women's and men's programs. The champion is the institution with the most combined total points for all sponsored sports based on their conference finish and the number of CIAA sponsored events.

Kristene Kelly, sports information director at Johnson C. Smith University was awarded the John Holley Sports Information Director Award. Kristene's achievement in establishing a 2004 spring sports tailored website and her excellence in sports information after less than five years in the profession has garnered this award.

Congratulations are going to Dr. Edward McLean of Elizabeth City State University and Ingrid Wicker-McCree of North Carolina Central University for being named Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator of the Year. Both individuals have made concentrated efforts to maximize the potential of their men's and women's programs, while maintaining equality between both programs.

This year's Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award has been presented to Peggy Davis of Virginia State University for providing extraordinary leadership for the Trojans' Athletic Department.
