HOW THEY DID IT - Game Recaps
The SWAC and MEAC played two games against each other
this weekend and split one-point decisions with Hampton
(MEAC) nipping Grambling State and Southern (SWAC) nipping
Bethune-Cookman.
The kicking game was the difference in the
SWAC/MEAC Challenge as BCSP No. 1 Hampton (1-0, 0-0 MEAC)
downed BCSP No. 2 Grambling State (0-1, 0-0 SWAC W) in
overtime. Hampton DB Derius Swinton blocked GSU kicker
Tim Manuel's extra point attempt after the Tigers answered Hampton's
overtime TD and point-after with a TD on WR Tim Abney's
12-yard pass from QB Brandon Landers (21-41-1-271, 4 TDs).
Hampton's Kendall Langford had blocked Manuel's point-after
attempt after Landers' third TD pass, this one a 51-yarder in the
third period to LaKeldrick Bridges (6 rec., 94 yds.) that put GSU
up 20-10. Hampton LB Ray Lewis also blocked a 32-yard
Manuel field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. Hampton scored first
in the extra period on Kevin Beverly's 10-yard reception
from back-up QB TJ Mitchell (6-16-1-89).
Andrew Paterini kicked through the extra point for what turned out to be the final
margin. Paterini was 3-of-3 on extra points and knocked through
field goals of 47 and 37 yards but also missed a 39-yarder and had a
40-yarder blocked. Mitchell had replaced starter
Princeton Shepherd (8-11-0-120) who went down with leg cramps in the
second quarter and did not return. Landers also connected with
Clyde Edwards on an 11-yard first period score and with
Henry Tolbert on a 29-yarder earlier in the third. Hampton opening
the scoring in the first quarter on a 55-yard flea-flicker pass from
QB Princeton Shephard to Marquay
McDaniels. The score that sent the game into overtime came late in the fourth period
with Hampton trailing 20-13. The Pirates recovered a Landers'
fumble on the GSU 13 and scored three plays later on a nine-yard
pass from Mitchell to wideout Onrea Jones
with 1:10 left. Hampton held Grambling to 32 rushing yards in 30 attempts.
Hampton rushed for 203 yards in 43 attempts led by
Van Morgan's 82 yards in 14 carries and Alonzo Coleman's
72 yards in 12 attempts.
The see-saw contest between Southern(1-0, 0-0 SWAC W)
and Bethune-Cookman (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) turned on three lost
fumbles by B-CC and a missed extra-point attempt by B-CC
placekicker Jesus Cortez late in the third quarter. The failed PAT came
after BCC QB Jimmie Russell (13-22-0-187, 2 TDs, 10 car., 84
yds., 1 TD) hit Paul Neufville with a 34-yard scoring strike to pull
the Wildcats within 24-23. The 'Cats would score again early in
the fourth quarter on Russell's one-yard run to go up 29-24
but Russell's pass for a two-point conversion failed. Southern
scored the game-winning TD after Keidrick Bailey
recovered Russell's second fumble of the game on the B-CC 27 with 8:45 left.
Three plays later SU QB JC Lewis (24-38-0-271, 4 TDs) capped
the drive by hitting Evan Alexander on a two-yard score. The
Jags' two-point attempt failed. Lewis, who threw a TD pass in
each quarter, also connected on a 55-yard first-quarter strike to
Gerard Landry (5 rec., 110 yds.), a five-yarder to
Del Roberts just before halftime and a 13-yarder to
Brian Washington in the third period. B-CC held Southern to just one yard rushing but could not contain Lewis.
