HOW THEY DID IT: Game Recaps_ Delaware State 63, St. Francis 28 RB Emmanuel Marc (5 car., 126 yds., 2 TDs) had early TD runs of 73 and 30 yards and WR Shaheer McBride (9 rec., 206 yds.) caught 4 TD passes (21, 46, 48, 13) as the Hornets (2-0, 1-0 MEAC) routed St. Francis. DSU QB Vashon Winton completed 12 of 13 passes for 222 yards and 4 TDs. McBride had nine receptions for 206 yards. _ Alabama A&M 30, Grambling State 27, OT Defending SWAC champion Grambling State (0-2, 0-1 SWAC W) lost its second straight game in overtime, succumbing to Alabama A&M (2-0, 1-0 SWAC E), its 45-6 victim in last year's SWAC title game, on a 20-yard field goal by Jeremy Licea in the first overtime. A&M QB Kelcy Luke rushed for 2 TDs (2, 5) and passed for another to lead the Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0 SWAC E). GSU QB Brandon Landers hit on 17 of 33 passes for 271 yards and 2 TDs (27, 7) with one interception. _ Miles 31, Tuskegee 20 Miles (1-1, 1-0 SIAC) was held to 156 yards of total offense but returned a fumble and an interception for scores en route to knocking off conference co-favorite Tuskegee (1-1, 1-1 SIAC). Tuskegee scored the first ten points of the game before Miles scored 31 straight followed by Tuskegee scoring the last ten. Miles QB Terrence Standfield completed 10 of 19 passes for 113 yards and two TDs (18, 16) without an interception. TU QB Kevin Huff was 23 of 44 for 240 yards with no TDs and one interception. _ Hampton 46, Howard 7 BCSP No. 1 Hampton (2-0 , 1-0 MEAC) RB Alonzo Coleman rushed for 172 yards (25 carries) and 3 TDs (29, 26, 2) and QB Princeton Shepherd (17-23-0) threw for 250 yards and 2 scores (12, 29) as the Pirates routed Howard (0-1, 0-1 MEAC). In the game Coleman became Hampton's all-time leading rusher (3,840 yards) and scorer (330 points). _ Southern 31, Mississippi Valley State 14 Southern (2-0, 1-0 SWAC W) got three TD passes (8, 65, 44) from QB J.C. Lewis (19-33-0-287) and picked off MVSU QB Aries Nelson (15-32-2-142) two times in downing the Delta Devils (1-1, 1-1 SWAC). MVSU was led by J. Hargett who rushed 26 times for 127 and both Delta Devils' TDs (2, 5). _ Bowie State 14, Johnson C. Smith 13 A missed extra point in the fourth quarter enabled Bowie State (2-0, 1-0 CIAA E) to escape with the win in Charlotte over JCSU (2-1, 0-1 CIAA W). BSU RB Nathaniel Queen rushed 33 times for 176 yards and scored a TD on a six-yard run. BSU led 14-0 at the half and surrendered third and fourth quarter TDs to the Golden Bulls on short runs. JCSU placekicker Herbert Collins' 45-yard field goal attempt as time expired fell short. _ Norfolk State 32, VMI 19 Senior RB Monte Anthony rushed 21 times for 116 yards and a career-high three TDs (3, 1, 9) and QB Casey Hansen was 17 of 25 for 227 yards as the Spartans (2-0, 0-0 MEAC)racked up 429 total offensive yards to get to 2-0 for the first time since 2002. _ Texas Southern 10, Alabama State 9 Texas Southern (2-0, 2-0 SWAC W)got a late interception of a Alex Engram pass that set up a 25-yard DJavan Conway field goal with 41 seconds left to edge Alabama State (0-2, 0-1 SWAC E). TSU RB Brent Wilson ran for 132 on 30 carries and had the TSU TD on a six-yard run. _ Arkansas-Pine Bluff 42, Alcorn State 14 UAPB (1-1, 1-1 SWAC W) got 229 rushing yards (30 carries) and three TDs (2, 1, 6) from Marshall Mallett in its domination of Alcorn State (0-2, 0-1 SWAC E). © 2006 Azeez Communications, Inc. |
