HOW THEY DID IT - Game Recaps- Kentucky State 31, No. 8 Lane 14
- Albany State 14, No. 5 Miles 0 Three-time defending SIAC champ Albany State (4-2, 3-0) held Miles (4-2, 3-1) to 128 yards of total offense, and off the scoreboard, and scored on two long second-quarter plays to take over sole possession of first place in the SIAC. The Golden Rams scored on a 67-yard pass from back-up QB Kisan Flakes to Gary Neavins and a 27-yarder from Flakes to Joshua Johnson. Flakes, who played in relief of starter Terrance Ransom (2-of-9, 14 yards), completed all three of his pass attempts for 118 yards. - No. 9 Delaware State 33, No. 10 Bethune-Cookman 31 DSU (3-2, 2-1) scored two touchdowns in the last six minutes of play to stage a stunning come-from-behind win over B-CC (3-3, 2-2) in Daytona Beach, Fl. B-CC's Justin Brannon scored on a 12-yard run with 6:34 to play to put the Wildcats up 31-21. But the Hornets came back to score on RB Emmanuel Marc's 20-yard run after a 7-play, 66-yard drive. That drive was kept alive with a big fourth-and-three conversion on a Vashon Winton to Derrick McNeil shovel pass that covered nine yards from the DSU 41-yard line. After holding B-CC to a three-and-out, the Wildcats got the ball back with 2:31 left at their own 34 and needed just five plays to cover the distance. The big play was a 42-yard completion from Winton (17 of 25, 190 yds., 2 TDs) to Shaheer McBride (7 rec., 97 yds., 1 TD). Winton hit Derrick McNeil for the game-winner from 18 yards out with 1:30 to play. The Hornets intercepted B-CC QB Jimmie Russell's (15 of 24, 194 yds., 1 TD) desperation pass on the game's final play. B-CC WB Eric Weems had an exceptional day catching 14 passes for 166 yards including a 57-yarder for a TD in the third quarter. - Elizabeth City State 27, Virginia State 0 The Vikings (5-1, 3-0) racked up 421 yards of offense and stretched their CIAA East Division lead to 1 1/2 games with a dominating performance against VSU (0-6, 0-3). ECSU QB Curtis Rich (11 of 20 , 190 yards) passed for two TDs (2, 36) and ran for two (1, 8) in the win. ECSU RB Brandon Fields ran 16 times for 104 yards. - No. 4 Grambling State 28, Mississippi Valley State 25 Grambling (2-3, 2-1) took the final lead in this see-saw contest on a Brandon Landers 18-yard TD strike to Clyde Edwards in the fourth quarter and secured the victory when MVSU placekicker Zack Gilarski misfired on a late fourth-quarter 34-yard field goal attempt. Landers (15 of 26, 215 yds., 1 TD) also scored on a seven-yard third quarter run. His counterpart, MVSU QB Aries Nelson, was equally effective hitting on 14 of 23 for 208 yards including a 71-yard second quarter scoring pass to Clarence Cotton. Trailing 13-6 at the half, GSU's Kentwon Gray returned the second half kickoff 98 yards to pull the G-Men even at 13. - Jackson State 19, Alabama State 13 Jackson State (4-1, 3-0) got two first-half touchdown passes (43 and 15 yards) from QB Jimmy Oliver (14 of 19, 161 yards)to lead 12-6 at the break and got a third-quarter 79-yard interception return for a score from Kevin Woodard that was the difference in the win over Alabama State (2-4, 2-3) in Mobile, Al. ASU RB Jay Peck rushed for 103 yards on 25 carries. ASU scored on two Anthony Johnson field goals (30, 27) and a late fourth-quarter nine-yard pass from QB T'Chelpio Woods to James Cray. - Johnson C. Smith 19, Livingstone 0 De'Audra Dix's 90-yard kickoff return TD to open the second half and a Marquis Belton eight-yard TD reception midway thru the first quarter were the highlights as JCSU (5-1, 3-1)shut out Livingstone (1-6, 1-3). - North Carolina Central 27, St. Augustine's 18 NCCU (6-0, 4-0) jumped up 24-0 on St. Aug's in the first half and gave up two late fourth-quarter TDs to allow the Falcons (1-5, 1-3) to make the final score respectable. Talented freshman QB Stadford Brown perhaps had his most difficult outing against the Falcons' defense completing just 12 of 29 passes for 149 yards and throwing two picks. He also had two first half scoring tosses of 10 yards to Charles Futrell and 21 yards to Julius McClellan. NCCU DB Amos Craig returned an interception 29 yards to put the Eagles up 21-0 in the first quarter. - South Carolina State 47, Norfolk State 10 SC State (2-3, 1-1) ran for 200 yards and passed for 275 and stuffed the Spartans' offense, holding them to 119 total yards, to keep its MEAC hopes alive with a rout of Norfolk State (3-2, 1-2).SCSU RB DeShawn Baker rushed for 128 yards on 17 carries and scored on a 2-yard run and a 29-pass reception while QB Cleveland McCoy was six of 14 for 133 yards including another TD strike of 42 yards to Gerald McCloud (4 rec., 103 yds.). SCSU RB Will Ford had TD runs of 1 and 36 yards. - No. 3 Alabama A&M 28, No. 6 Southern 21 Alabama A&M (4-1, 3-1) scored two fourth quarter TDs, both on passes from QB Kelcy Luke, to squeak past Southern (3-2, 2-2). Luke (11-21, 96 yards), who passed for two TDs, also ran for 58 yards including a 17-yard score midway thru the first period. The Bulldogs other score came when Ulysses Banks returned the opening kickoff 90 yards to paydirt. Southern QB CJ Byrd had one scoring toss and a seven-yard TD run.
