TARPKINS: Leads FVSU regular season title defense

SIAC HOOPS: The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference held its annual preseason basketball luncheon last week outside Atlanta and named its 2006-07 men's and women's preseason picks as chosen by the league's coaches. Chosen to lead the SIAC at the end of the season is Paine for the men, which lost to eventual champion Stillman in last year's tournament semifinals, and the defending SIAC regular season champion Fort Valley State for the women. FVSU bowed out in last year's tournament finals to eventual women's champion, Paine. Highlighting the list of top players are six returning players from the 2005-06 all conference teams for the men and five returning players from the 2005-06 all conference teams for the women. Included in the list are the 2005-06 SIAC Players of the Year Brian Harper, of Paine for the men and Shekiya Tarpkins, of Fort Valley State for the women.

CIAA/MEAC/SWAC HOOPS: The CIAA unveiled its 2006-07 men's and women's basketball picks Wednesday at the Charlotte Convention Center beginning with coaches interviews at 10:30 a.m. followed by a light lunch. The MEAC made its preseason predictions Thursday in Raleigh at the RBC Center with the coaches interviews beginning at 10 a.m. and a luncheon following at 12:30 p.m. The SWAC will hold a basketball teleconference with its conference coaches on Wed., Oct. 18 beginning at 10 a.m.
