CIAA HOOPS STARS: Bowie State senior point guard Gil Goodrich has been chosen as the men's player of the year and Elizabeth City State junior center Celeste Trahan women's player of the year as the CIAA announced its all-conference basketball team and award winners Tuesday. Goodrich, a 5-10 guard from Linthicum, Maryland who started his college career in the black college ranks at Howard University finished it as a sterling performer at Bowie State. Headed into the final week of the regular season, Goodrich leads all of NCAA Div. II basketball in scoring at 27.0 points per game, a mark that also tops the CIAA, but he also leads the conference in assists (6.8 apg.), steals (2.4 spg.), free throw percentage (86.3%) and three-pointers made (4.29 pg.). Goodrich had a 52-point game in December and recently had a 41-point performance against St. Augustine's. Virginia State senior center Avis Wyatt, who led the conference in blocked shots (3.2 pg.) while averaging 16.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, was named the men's defensive player of the year. Goodrich and Wyatt lead the 12-man all-conference team. Trahan, from Stockton, Ca., leads the CIAA in scoring (19.5 ppg.), and rebounding (12.2 rpg.) while leading the Lady Vikings to a 18-7 overall mark including a 15-3 CIAA record. Her teammate, 5-7 senior guard Deanna Price, of Washington, D.C., is the defensive player of the year. Price leads Div. II averaging 4.9 steals per game and also scores 11.0 points, grabs 6.5 rebounds and hands out 5.5 assists per game. The ECSU teammates lead the 12 selectees to the women's team.

Johnson C. Smith forward Jerry Hollis and North Carolina Central guard Jori Nwachukwu were named the top rookies in the CIAA and leaders of the five-person all-rookie teams. Nwachukwu, a native of Upper Marlboro, Md., averaged 12.8 points and 9.9 rebounds for the 20-5 Lady Eagles. Hollis won rookie of the week honors seven times in winning the men's award. The Charlotte, N.C. native averaged 12.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
