Coe out at Alabama State?
A story in the March 27 edition of the Montgomery Advertiser says that Alabama State head football coach Charles Coe may be leaving to take a position with an NFL team.

Coe, who took over the Hornets program three weeks before the first game of the 2003 season following the abrupt firing of former head coach L.C. Cole, has led ASU to a 29-18 record over the last four seasons including the 2004 SWAC title, the school's first conference championship in 11 years.

In the Advertiser story by ASU beat writer Josh Moon, Coe says he has been offered a job as an assistant coach by an unnamed NFL team that he is likely to accept.

"I'd say there's a very, very good chance that I'll take this job," said Coe.

Coe says he is contemplating departure from ASU because the school has not offered him an extension of his current contract, a three-year deal paying him $125,000 which expires in December. He says he planned to meet with ASU Athletic Director, former head coach Ron Dickerson Tuesday to discuss the situation.

"This is not about money. This is about my family. Right now, I can't buy a house here. I can't do anything here because I'm not sure I'll be around past December. I'm not happy with the way things have been handled with my contract. This could've been avoided."

Goodrich tallies 13 points, East goes down
Bowie State senior guard Gil Goodrich tallied 13 points but it wasn't enough as the East All-Stars fell to the West in the second annual NABC Div. II All-Star game held in conjunction with the NCAA Div. II Elite Eight Basketball Tournament in Springfield, Mass.

Goodrich connected on five of 14 shots from the field, and made three of seven from behind the three-point line in totalling his 13 points. He also had a game-high eight assists as a point guard starter for the East. He misfired on his two free throw attempts.

The East squad shot 52% from the field in the first half and built a 22-point lead before the West staged a second-half rally to pull out the game.

St. Augustine's senior guard Antonio Fitzgerald was selected to play in the game but did not make the trip.
