Norfolk State men, Hampton women capture MEAC outdoor track and field titles
BALTIMORE - The Lady Pirates of Hampton and the Norfolk State Spartans captured the 2007 MEAC Outdoor Track and Field crowns last week at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University. Hampton's Andrew Peresta earned Outstanding Performer accolades for men, while Hampton's Yvette Lewis repeated as the Outstanding Performer for the women.

The Norfolk State men's team posted 165 points to capture their second straight title and fourth overall. The Spartans also became the first men's team in conference history to win all three MEAC track titles (cross country, indoor and outdoor) two years in a row. Peresta won the gold for sixth-place Hampton in the 110m hurdles (14.20) as well as the 400m hurdles (51.20) and finished second in the 400m (46.95) to garner outstanding performer honors.

On the women's side, The Lady Pirates won their second consecutive outdoor title and fifth overall with 134 points. The Lady Pirates also swept the MEAC track titles (cross country, indoor and outdoor) this season. Maryland-Eastern Shore showed well in the sprints and dominated distant events to finish behind the Lady Pirates with 119 points.

Lewis earned outstanding performer honors for the second straight year by recording 50.5 points, winning the 100 and 200 meters, the 110 high hurdles and the triple jump, where she broke her own record set at last year's championships. She also ran a leg of the winning 4x100 meter relay and finished second in the long jump.

"We talked all year about winning all three titles, explained Lewis. "We had a lot of people that were hurt but we came together and were able to win it all." Hampton's Maurice Pierce was named the Outstanding Coach for the women.
