Spring Sports Round-UpCIAA, SIAC tennis champs shut outMen's and women's tennis champs in both the CIAA and SIAC took it on the chin in NCAA Div. II regional first round matchups last Thursday. In the Mid Atlantic Regional in Savannah, Ga., the region's No. 2 seed, Armstrong Atlantic State (26-0) defeated CIAA women's champion Fayetteville State 5-0 in a first round match. FSU finishes the season at 19-5. Armstrong Atlantic's men's team (25-3) handed CIAA champion Shaw (17-1) its first match loss of the season with a 5-0 win in a first round men's match. Top seed and fourth-ranked West Florida (18-6) downed SIAC champ Tuskegee (14-10), 5-0, in a first round South Regional women's contest. Valdosta State (16-5) topped SIAC men's champion Fort Valley State (11-9), 8-0, in a men's South Regional match-up. Norfolk State men, Hampton women capture MEAC outdoor track and field titles
Spartans' Head Coach, Kenneth Giles, earned Outstanding Coaching honors. Maryland-Eastern Shore wracked up 65 points in field events, almost half its point total, to finish behind Norfolk State with 138.5 points. On the women's side, The Lady Pirates won their second consecutive outdoor title and fifth overall with 134 points. The Lady Pirates also swept the MEAC track titles (cross country, indoor and outdoor) this season. Maryland-Eastern Shore showed well in the sprints and dominated distant events to finish behind the Lady Pirates with 119 points. Lewis earned outstanding performer honors for the second straight year by recording 50.5 points, winning the 100 and 200 meters, the 110 high hurdles and the triple jump, where she broke her own record set at last year's championships. She also ran a leg of the winning 4x100 meter relay and finished second in the long jump. "We talked all year about winning all three titles, explained Lewis. "We had a lot of people that were hurt but we came together and were able to win it all." Hampton's Maurice Pierce was named the Outstanding Coach for the women. It was also a record setting day for both the men and women. Maryland Eastern Shore's Peter Sang set a new MEAC record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:32.08. The previous record was 9:33.43 held by Maryland Eastern Shore's Barnabas Togom in 2004. Kimani Kirton, of Maryland Eastern Shore broke the men's shot put record with 18.08m (59-04.00 ft.). South Carolina State's Phil Murphy set the previous record of 17.42m (57-02 ft.) in 1979. Hampton's 4x100m women's relay team set a new record with a time of 44.97. Florida A&M's 2002 squad previously set the record in 45.02 seconds.
