End-of-year awards handed outSt. Augustine's men, N. C. Central women take CIAA All-Sports trophies
April Emory, sports information director at Elizabeth City State was awarded the John Holley Sports Information Director Award. April's achievement in serving on the national CoSIDA Board of Directors as a College Division Representative as well as being the President of the CIAA-Sports Information Directors Association since 2005, garnered her this award. Peggy Davis of Virginia State and Dr. Denisha Hendricks of Johnson C. Smith were named athletic director and senior woman administrator of the year. Both individuals have made concentrated efforts to maximize the potential of their men's and women's programs, while maintaining equality between both programs. This year's Jeanette A. Lee Athletic Achievement Award was presented to Bill Hayes of North Carolina Central for providing extraordinary leadership for the Eagles' Athletic Department. Hampton women, Norfolk State men continue their dominance in MEAC
Each institution received a $25,000 that was presented at the MEAC Spring Delegate Assembly and Committee Meetings in Virginia Beach.. Hampton's women's programs won conference championship titles in softball and swept all three track titles including cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. Morgan State finished second on the women's side with 59 total points. Maryland Eastern Shore followed closely with 54.5 points while North Carolina A&T finished with 53 total points. Delaware State was fourth (52.5) and Howard was fifth (46.5). Albany State sweeps in SIAC
For the men's competition Albany State finished with 34 points. Albany State took home conference titles in football, and basketball, finished second in track & field and baseball, en route to their championship. Morehouse finished in second place with 30 points after finishing first in cross county, tennis and track & field. Fort Valley State finished in third place with 22 points. Tuskegee (14), Stillman College (10), Benedict (7), Paine (4) and Lane (4) rounded out the scoring. Albany State was awarded their Commissioner's All Sports Trophy last week at the Champions Luncheon in Decatur, GA. Prairie View A&M's men's programs captured the C.D. Henry Award for the top program among men's sports and Jackson State's women grabbed the Barbara Jacket/Sadie Magee Award signifying the top SWAC women's sports program. On the women's side, Jackson State earned 94 points on the season _ highlighted by a women's golf conference title and sharing the women's basketball title. The Lady Tigers also earned two second-place and two third-place finishes. Grambling State _ who won the women's soccer and women's indoor track and field titles _ finished second with 76 points. Prairie View A&M who won volleyball and shared the women's basketball title was third with 74.5 points. In the tally for the overall sports trophy, Jackson State finished atop the standings with 160 points.
