All MEAC RB Chad Simpson ran for 142 yards and 3 TDs (7, 10, 10) as the Bears (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) rolled over Savannah State (0-1).MSU QB Mario Melton was 10 of 17 for 121 yards and 2 TDs without a pick. .
_ Virginia Union 28, Lenoir-Rhyne 13
The Panthers (1-0, 0-0 CIAA E) got 247 passing yards and a fourth quarter TD pass from QB Lamar Little (14-27-1), a 21-yard rushing TD from T. Donaldson (21 car., 79 yds.) and a 29-yard interception return by D. J. Spellmon for a TD in its road win. VUU wideout Michael Hampton had five receptions for 108 yards. Jarad Taylor (5 rec., 51 yards) sealed the win with an eight-yard pass from Little in the final quarter.
_ Southern 33, Florida A&M
Southern (1-0, 0-0 SWAC W) and Florida A&M (0-1, 0-0 MEAC) see-sawed back and forth until the Jaguars scored three consecutive second-half TDs to pull away to give the SWAC its first win in three tries in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge in Birmingham. Darren Coates' 90-yard TD run opened the scoring and he added a one-yarder early in the fourth quarter to give Southern a 33-20 lead. He finished with 142 yards on ten carries. FAMU RB Phillip Sylvester had TD runs of 45 and 4 yards and totalled 101 yards on 14 carries. SU QB Bryant Lee was 22 of 29 for 215 yards.
_ Alabama A&M 49, Tennessee State 23
QB Kelcy Luke (18-29-1, 261 yards) threw for three TDs (44, 33, 34) and ran eight yards for another as the Bulldogs (1-0, 0-0 SWAC E) outscored Tennessee State (0-1). A&M WR Thomas Harris had four receptions for 100 yards including the 44-yarder for a TD. TSU RB Javarris Williams ran 20 times for 123 yards while QB Antonio Hefner completed 15 of 30 passes for 173 yards and one TD but had three picks.
_ Alabama State 24, Jacksonville State 19
QB Chris Mitchell completed 10 of 11 passes for 206 yards and two TDs (32, 61) and the Hornets (1-0, 0-0 SWAC E) overcame four JU field goals to give new head coach Reggie Barlow a victory in his debut. ASU fell behnd 13-0 before scoring just before halftime on a 32-yard Mitchell pass to Marcus McCall. Mitchell also hit Antonio James with a 61-yard TD in the third quarter while Rahmod Traylor had a 66-yard fourth-quarter TD run. RB Jay Peck (16 car., 79 yards) had the game-clincher on a 15-yard TD run with three minutes left in the game.
_ Bethune-Cookman 31, Jacksonville 17
QB Jimmie Russell ran for 114 yards on 16 carries and scored on runs of 13, 33 and 8 yards and Justin Brannon ran for 103 yards on 16 carries as the Wildcats (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) piled up 283 rushing yards in their opener.
_ Delaware State 23, Coastal Carolina 18
RB Kareem Jones ran for 171 yards on 24 carries including a 63-yard TD and WR Shaheer McBride (4 rec., 81 yards) had scoring receptions of 53 and 10 yards from Vashon Winton (7-12-1, 84 yards) as DelState (1-0, 0-0 MEAC) upset 23rd-ranked Coastal Carolina (0-1).
_ Grambling State 31, Alcorn State 10
QB Brandon Landers (19-36-0) threw for 303 yards and four TDs, two to all-SWAC WR Clyde Edwards (4, 16) and the other two to WR Reginald Jackson (44, 69) as the Tigers (1-0, 1-0 SWAC W) gave new coach Rod Broadway a win in his first game. Jackson had six receptions for 168 yards. GSU RB Frank Warren ran 30 times for 143 yards.
_ Tuskegee 40, Miles 6
QB Jacary Atkinson (15-26-1, 267 yards) threw for three TD passes (62, 10, 12) and ran for another from five yards out as the Golden Tigers (1-0, 1-0 SIAC) routed Miles (0-2, 0-1 SIAC). Lorenz Crawford had four receptions for 113 yards including a 62-yarder that opened the scoring.
