HOW THEY DID IT: - Game Recaps

­ BCSP No. 1 Hampton survived a scare from Morgan State and set up a showdown with No. 2 Delaware State this weekend in Hampton.

­ New coach Rod Broadway's Grambling State team knocked off defending league champion Alabama A&M and with Southern rolling along at 4-0, the two familiar faces are back atop the SWAC West standings.

­ Everyone else is struggling for wins ­ Elizabeth City State is yet to get one ­while Virginia Union rolls.

­ Tuskegee (3-0) stayed undefeated headed towards an Oct. 20 meeting with four-time SIAC champ Albany State.

­ BCSP No. 1 Hampton 24, Morgan State 17, OT

Morgan State (1-3, 0-1 MEAC) roared back from a 17-0 first-half deficit to tie Hampton (3-0, 3-0 MEAC) in regulation before the Pirates pulled the game out on a 30-yard TD pass in overtime from QB T. J. Mitchell (14-34-1, 253 yards) to Justin Brown, his only reception of the game. It was the final one of three TD passes (13, 73) from Mitchell. Jeremy Gilchrist had three receptions for 107 yards including a 73-yarder for a TD while Van Morgan rushed for 98 yards on 23 carries. Chad Simpson rushed for 142 yards on 33 carries and scored both MSU TDs on 6- and 5-yard runs.

­ No. 6 Grambling State 31, No. 2 Alabama A&M 6

Grambling State (2-1, 2-0 SWAC W) held SWAC scoring and total offense leader Alabama A&M (3-1, 1-1 SWAC W) to 147 yards and two field goals in knocking off the league's defending champion. GSU QB Brandon Landers was efficient, completing 22 of 32 passes without an interception for 225 yards and two TDs. WR Reginald Jackson led the G-Men with nine receptions for 61 yards and scored on a 7-yard reception and a 26-yard run. WR Clyde Edwards (5 rec., 51 yds.) had the other TD reception, opening the scoring with a 18-yard TD catch. Grambling had three sacks and held A&M to 30 rushing yards on 23 carries. AA&M QB Kelcy Luke (14-26-0) passed for 117 yards.

­ South Carolina State 20, Winston-Salem State 7

South Carolina State (2-2, 1-0 MEAC) rushed for 289 yards, totalled 493 yards on offense and totalled six sacks in limiting WSSU (2-2) to 200 yards. The Bulldogs scored in each quarter, getting touchdowns early in the first quarter and late in the fourth while converting field goals in the middle. William Ford paced the SCSU ground game with 162 yards on 27 carries. QB Cleveland McCoy hit 12 of 24 passes including a 71-yard toss to Terrence Smith that opened the scoring.

­ Southern 41, Tennessee State 34

Southern (4-0, 2-0 SWAC W) came back from 13-0 and 27-6 first-half deficits to outscore Tennessee State (2-2) 35-7 over the better part of three quarters. RB Darren Coates scored three TDs, one receiving, and QB Bryant Lee (23-33-0)threw for 305 yards and a career-high four TDs (13, 31, 6, 48).

­ Tuskegee 34, Fort Valley State 3

Tuskegee (3-0, 3-0 SIAC) picked off four Fort Valley State (3-2, 2-1 SIAC) passes and recovered two fumbles on defense and got three TD passes of its own from QB Jacary Atkinson (57, 24, 15) in rolling past the Wildcats. Frank Williams returned one interception 85 yards to paydirt to end the scoring in the fourth quarter.

­ Virginia Union 28, St. Paul's 3

Virginia Union RB Elihu Smith rambled for 101 yards on 13 carries capped off by a 39-yard fourth quarter TD scamper while QB Lamar Little ran for a 38-yard score and passed for two others as the Panthers (4-0, 3-0 CIAA E) shot past St. Paul's (1-3, 0-1 CIAA E). VUU did most of its damage on the ground racking up 255 rushing yards in 45 carries.

­ Alabama State 28, Alcorn State 25

Trailing 18-14 entering the fourth quarter, Alabama State rallied for two touchdowns in the span of 90 seconds to take the lead and remain unbeaten with a win over Alcorn State. The Hornets (4-0, 2-0 SWAC E) led early 14-0 but surrendered 18 straight second quarter points to trail the winless Braves (0-4, 0-3 SWAC E) at the half. After a scoreless third quarter, 'Bama State got the ball deep in Braves' territory following a 41-yard punt return from Joel Riggins and took the lead at 21-14 with 9:30 to play when QB Chris Mitchell ran in from 23-yards out. The ensuing kickoff was fumbled by Jason Bruce, recovered by the Hornets and returned to the Braves' 11-yard line. Mitchell scored on a 1-yard run four plays later. Jay Peck ran for 143 yards on 24 carries and caught two passes for 43 yards. Mitchell was 9 of 16 for 136 yards and threw a 7-yard TD pass early in the second quarter.
