Winston-Salem State finished the 2012 football season 14-1, appeared in the NCAA Division II national championship game and with that was voted No. 1 in the final Boxtorow national media poll.

After finishing as HBCU national champions last year with a 13-1 record, the most wins ever by an HBCU, the Rams rewrote their own record with 14 wins and took a step closer by playing in the national championship game.

The Rams ended their season Saturday falling to Valdosta State 35-7.

The Rams received 12-of-17 first place votes.

MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman, who was No. 1 for part of the season, finished No. 2.  The Wildcats received two first place votes.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff won its first SWAC championship outright, defeating Jackson State in the SWAC championship game 24-21 in overtime in Birmingham on December 8 and finished No. 3.  The Golden Lions also received two first place votes.

Tennessee State was the only other team to receive first place votes, receiving one, and rounded out the top five, one point behind No. 4 Tuskegee, the SIAC champions.

Jackson State, who started the season 2-4 then rebounded to win five-straight to propel itself to the SWAC title game, finished No. 6, while Alabama State finished No. 7 and Alabama A&M No. 8.

North Carolina A&T and Howard finished No. 9 and No. 10, respectively and finish in the final poll for the first time since FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW, began administering the poll in 2007.

The Boxtorow media poll is administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW and is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.
