South Carolina State University swept the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championship titles on Sunday afternoon at Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh N.C. The Bulldog men defeated Florida A&M, 4-3, for their fifth consecutive title and 10th overall championship. SCSU's Lady Bulldogs defeated Howard University, 4-1, for their eighth straight title and ninth overall.
In men's doubles play, Florida A&M took the early lead with wins at the number one and three positions.
South Carolina State won their first point during the singles matches at the number four spot when Peteris Vinogradous defeated FAMU’s Chidi Gabriel to even the match at one apiece. The Bulldogs followed with a win at the number five spot as Artemiy Nikitin defeated Fabrice Myrtil 6-2, 6-0.
Florida A&M’s C. Salif Kante, the 2012 MEAC Player of the Year, won at the number one singles position over South Carolina State’s Tomas Bizon 6-3, 6-1, to tie the match at two-all.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth with South Carolina State winning at the number three singles position and Florida A&M getting the point at the number six singles spot.
Tied at three, South Carolina State’s Dmytro Kovalevych and Florida A&M’s Levan Clark played in the deciding game at the number two position. Kovalevych defeated Clark 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 to aid his team to the championship title.
Kovalevych, who tallied a 3-0 mark in singles play, was named Outstanding Performer while head coach Hardeep Judge was named Men’s Outstanding Coach for the eighth time in his career.
In women's doubles action, SCSU and Howard split games with Howard winning at the number one position, 8-6, and South Carolina State winning at the number two spot, 8-2. The duo of Brooke Hawthorne and Michelle Brown topped Victoriia Khatcei and Laura Bosneag, 8-6, to earn the Lady Bison the doubles victory and first point of the day.
Down 0-1 heading into singles play, South Carolina State earned their first point when Howard’s Brooke Hawthorne retired at the number three position due to injury.
Tied at 1-all, South Carolina State earned additional points at the number two, three and six positions. The Lady Bulldogs captured the 2012 women's championship title at the number one singles position with 2012 MEAC Player of the Year Suhaila Jad defeating Katelyn Stokes of Howard 7-5, 6-1.
Khatcei and Bosneag were named Co-Outstanding Performers while head coach Hardeep Judge was named Outstanding Coach.
Both Khatcei and Bosneag recorded a 2-0 record in singles play and a 2-1 mark in doubles play. Judge was named the Outstanding Coach for the eighth time in his career on the women’s side.
Both SCSU teams will receive the conference's automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Tennis Championship.
