Augusta, GA— The Paine College Lions won the 2012 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Golf Classic after a strong finish in the final round on Tuesday at the Jones Creek Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Down three strokes to defending champion Morehouse College coming into today, the Lions shot a team score of 340 for a two-day total of 678 to capture the title. Leading the way for Paine were freshmen Carlos Solis and Victor Tapia, who shot the two best scores of the tournament at 155 and 156 respectively. For his efforts, Solis was named SIAC Player of the Year, SIAC Freshman of the Year, and Tournament MVP as well as being named, along with teammate Tapia, to the All-SIAC first team and the All-Tournament team. Finishing second with a team score of 683 was Benedict College. The Tigers shot a team-low score of 335 in the final round to secure a second place finish. Jordan Buchanan led the way for Benedict with a two-day score of 166 and was named to the All-SIAC first team as well as the All-Tournament team after finishing in the top five. Tiger trio Anthony Wik, Eddie Smith III, and Kelly Willis also finished in the top 10 at the classic to earn All-SIAC second team honors. First round leader Morehouse College took home third place at this year’s classic after shooting a 355 in the final round to finish with a team score of 690. The Maroon Tigers were led by Bryan McElderry, who shot a 159 to earn All-SIAC first team and All-Tournament team honors, and Justin McElderry, who shot a 174 and was named to the All-SIAC second team.
