HBCU Olympic Update - 8/4/12 - Three make the finals

Seven of 13 HBCU alumni competed today in various track and field events at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Ramon Gittings (St. Augustine's) representing Barbados finished 6th in Heat 5 of the 100m preliminary round with a time of 10.35.  The heat was won by Jamaica's Asafa Powell (10.04).  By not finishing in the top four, Gittings failed to advance to the semifinals.London Olympics 2012

Chris Brown (Norfolk State) running for the Bahamas and Dane Hyatt (St. Augustine's), wearing the colors of his native Jamaica, have both advanced to the 400m dash semifinals.  Brown will be running in Lane 6 of Heat 2 in the semifinal round while Hyatt will be in Lane 1 of Heat 3.  The 400m dash semifinal round is scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon at 3:40pm ET.

Allison Randall (Morgan State - Jamaica) finished 15th in her group during the discuss preliminary round and did not qualify for the finals.

Both Michael Tinsley (Jackson State - USA) and Leford Green (Johnson C. Smith - Jamaica) have qualified for the finals in the men's 400m hurdles. Tinsley won his semifinal heat on Saturday with a time of 48.18.  Green finished second in the same heat at 48.61.  Finals are scheduled for Monday  afternoon at 3:45pm ET.

Former Hampton standout Francina McCorory (USA) has advanced to the women's 400m finals finishing second in her heat with a time of 50.19.  Finals are scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) at 4:10pm ET.

Former Lincoln (MO) performer Semoy Hackett, running for Trinidad and Tobago, failed to qualify for the women's 100m finals finishing fifth in her heat  where only Carmelita Jeter and Veronica Campbell-Brown advanced to the finals.
