Newcomer of the Week Denzel Mooney, Lincoln University (PA) Class: Junior Position: Guard Height: 6-3 Weight: 210 Hometown: Baltimore, MD
Notes: Mooney has become an elite scorer this year. On Saturday against Livingstone College, he logged 24 points, giving him that total in both of the Lions' games this week. He has now scored at least 20 points in five contests this year, all of which have come in the last six games. His six rebounds in the CIAA opener versus Saint Augustine's College on Tuesday tied a season high.
Coach of the Week Stephen Joyner, Sr., Johnson C. Smith University Coach Joyner and the Golden Bulls basketball team have rebounded from a four-game skid that dropped them to 2-4 to win their last five games in a row. The five-game winning streak includes two CIAA road wins against Chowan (71-55) and Elizabeth City State (77-75). The Golden Bulls are 7-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
WOMEN
Player of the Week Courtney Medley, Winston-Salem State University Class: Junior Position: Guard Height: 5-8 Hometown: Chesapeake, VA
Notes: Medley had a great week of performances on the court; leading the Lady Rams in scoring 2-3 games and scoring a career high against Virginia State (24pts.). Her performances set the tone for each game, helping the Lady Rams go a perfect 3-0 to start the new year.
Rookie of the Week Cynthia Johnson, Lincoln University (PA) Class: Freshman Position: Guard Height: 5-7 Hometown: Randallstown, MD
Notes: Johnson emerged as a scorer this week, tallying her first two games in double digits including a season-high 14 against the Lady Shock of Washington Adventist. A freshman point guard, she also set new individual marks in that game with rebounds (6) and steals (4).
Newcomer of the Week Jasmine Newkirk, Winston-Salem State University Class: Sophomore Position: Guard Height: 5-8 Hometown: Raleigh, NC
Notes: Newkirk gave solid performances this week and played an important part in helping the Lady Rams win three games on the road.
Coach of the Week Vanessa Taylor, Johnson C. Smith University Coach Taylor and the JCSU women's basketball team have started the 2010-11 season with a 9-0 record, including two road CIAA victories against Chowan (57-54) and Elizabeth City State (60-52). Winning has been a total team effort, with multiple double digit scorers in each contest; and a different leading scorer from game to game. This is the best start for the women's basketball program. Last season, Coach Taylor had a 9-1 start to the year, winning their first six games. JCSU is the only unbeaten team remaining in the CIAA and ranks second in scoring defense (only allowing 53 points per game).
