The 2012 SWAC Champion Alabama State men's golf team will play in its first NCAA Tournament in the Bowling Green Regional May 17-19 in Bowling Green, Ky.Alabama State University

The Hornets, which won their first men's SWAC Golf Championship on April 25, are one of 14 teams in the regional as the tournament field was announced late Monday night. Among the teams competing against the Hornets in the regional are UCLA, Arkansas, Memphis and Jacksonville State.

“It's a great opportunity, and it's an opportunity to represent Alabama State University,” head coach Dr. Gary Grandison said. “We will be able to show how progressive we are as an institution and show what type of gentlemen we have here. I am really proud of this group.”

It is a bit of symmetry for the men's program, as in 2009 then-freshmen John Montgomery was an individual qualifier in the NCAA Tournament at this same venue. In 2012, Montgomery returns with the conference champion men's squad.

“What's amazing is at the site at the time, the officials said they would be hosting the regional again in 2012,” Dr. Grandison said of the 2009 NCAA Tournament regional at the Club at Olde Stone, hosted by Western Kentucky. “I remember telling John, 'That's your senior year. Next time, we have to get back here as a team.' So for it to actually happen where we are back at that venue as a team is incredible.”

The men return to competition this Friday-Sunday in the 26th PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla. before heading to the NCAA Tournament.
