|Winston-Salem State sweeps CIAA All-Sports Trophies|
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics ended the 2011-12 year with its second consecutive sweep of the CIAA All-Sports Trophies. Both the Loretta Taylor and C.H. Williams trophies were presented to WSSU during the conference awards program at the Newport News Marriott at City Center Thursday afternoon.
The Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy is awarded to the university with the most successful women’s athletic teams. The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams finished the athletic year winning conference championships in women’s cross country, women’s tennis, and softball. The Rams captured the C.H. Williams All-Sports Trophy after bringing home conference championships in football and baseball.
Coach of the Year and All-Academic Team Awards were presented in 16 sports as part of a ceremony that officially ended the 2011-2012 athletic season even though several coaches and administrators were attending the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships.
WSSU had three Coach of the Year awardees including Inez Turner (women's cross country), Kevin Ritsche (baseball) and Lataya Hilliard-Gray (softball). Tonia Walker was named Senior Woman Administrator of the Year while William "Bill" Hayes picked up awards as Athletic Director of the Year and Jeanette Lee Administrator of the Year.
The All-Academic Team awards were given to the squad with the league's highest grade point average. Winston-Salem State and Saint Augustine's led the awardees by posting the highest GPA in four sports. SAC led the league in both women's indoor and outdoor track, volleyball and women's basketball. WSSU posted the top average in men's indoor track, baseball, golf and bowling.
Chowan's Allie Kolezynski was named CIAA Woman of the Year award and presented a scholarship from the CIAA Senior Woman Administrators.
St. Augustine's Chris Copeland and Shaw's Lolia Kienka were honored as CIAA Scholar Athletes of the Year.
Bowie State University was recognized by the CIAA Student Athletic Advisory Committee for providing the most positive game environment during the season.
The program also included a special tribute to the Shaw Lady Bears Division II National Champion Women's Basketball Team.
