Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah State University Tiger football team will make its home debut in the renovated Theodore A. Wright Stadium against the Howard University Bison at 7 p.m., Oct. 1.
The university has scheduled a series of events to celebrate the “coming home” game.
Student Government Association President Ruben L. Chiza will preside over the official dedication and grand opening ceremony for the stadium beginning at 3 p.m. on Sept. 29. SSU Interim President Cheryl D. Dozier and University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby will participate in the opening event for the $6 million stadium renovation project, which includes construction of new team locker rooms, ticket booths, concession areas, track and field turf. In 2009, Savannah State students voted to pay an extra fee assessment each semester to fund a new student center, which was later expanded to include stadium renovations. Both projects were funded by the Georgia Higher Education Facilities Authority.
SSU will honor its athletic heritage at 7 p.m. on Sept. 30 when six new members are inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2011 inductees are Richard Basil (football), Carl Crump, (men’s basketball), William R. “Bill” Davis (football coach), Russell Ellington (men’s basketball coach), Phyllis Oliver Mattox (women’s tennis) and Kim Jones Walton (women’s basketball). Davis and Ellington will be enshrined posthumously. Damon Evans, vice president for Business Operations at The Markley Group and a former athletics director at the University of Georgia, will be the guest speaker. Shannon Sharpe, CBS Sports Analyst, NFL and SSU 2010 Hall of Fame inductee, will also take part in the ceremony. There is an admission charge.
Tailgating begins at 2 p.m. where game patrons can enjoy music and other activities. Tailgate spaces are available for purchase.
Cheerleaders, the marching band and others will lead the pep rally beginning at 4 p.m., followed by the arrival of the Tiger football team for its “Tiger walk” stadium entrance, which will be led by Sharpe. After the pre-game show, Sharpe will handle the honorary coin toss for the 7 p.m. kick-off. The first 2,000 patrons will receive a poster commemorating Shannon Sharpe’s induction in the 2011 NFL Hall of Fame. SSU will offer fans a fireworks display as the post-game show.
