Coppin State College has named Alice Smith as women's bowling coach and Derrick McMillian as men's and women's tennis coach.Smith, who serves as head of the circulation department in the Coppin State library, replaced Ronelda DeShields, who guided Coppin to a 3-4-1 record during its first season of varsity competition last year.
The Baltimore native received her bachelor's in English from the University of Maryland in 1975 and a master's in library science, also from Maryland, in 1977. She has been a summer league bowler for the past five years and has been a volunteer in the Coppin athletic department for the past nine, assisting with various administrative duties.
McMillian, who served as an assistant coach last season at Coppin, has worked as a tennis teaching professional in the Baltimore area for 10 years.
Currently president of the Baltimore Tennis Club, McMillian is a member of the American Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association. He annually serves as director of three local tournaments, including teh Baltimore Open Tennis Tournament.
McMillian replaces Greg Ogle, who accepted a position at Morgan State.
The Coppin men's tennis team compiled a 3-16 record last season, while the women finished 3-14.
