The Coppin State women's cross country team will be looking to defend its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title, while the men's team will be looking for its first crown since 1993 at the MEAC Championships at Oregon Ridge Park in Baltimore on Saturday.

"We're not as deep as we've been in the past, but we've done well against the conference teams that we've faced so far," said Coppin head coach Ernest Barrett, whose squad has claimed five of the last six women's championships.

"We've been training really well the past two weeks, so I think we'll be ready." The Lady Eagles won four straight titles from 1991-94 and regained the crown last season after placing second in 1995.

Junior Isis Green, fifth at the 1996 league championship, has paced the Lady Eagles so far this season as the first Coppin runner across the line in all four meets in which she has competed.

Zara Eden, Draphet Moody, Lisa Taylor, Sceana Young, Elethia Rhoden and Janee Ward have also been key runners for the Lady Eagles.

The Coppin men's team claimed titles in 1991, 1992 and 1993 but has been out of the running since a second-place finish in 1994.

"This is one of the better men's teams we've had in a while, and from what I've seen of the other conference teams we've faced, no one is going to run away with the title," said Barrett. "We've already beaten Hampton, the defending champion, so I' think the men have as good a chance to win as the women do."

Other schools competing, besides Coppin and Morgan State, are Bethune-Cookman, Delaware State, Florida A&M, Hampton, Howard, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina A&T, South Carolina State and newcomer Norfolk State.

The women's race (5 kilometers) starts at 10 a.m. followed by the men (8K) at 11. Morgan State is hosting the event, which returns to Baltimore after four years in Greensboro.

Admission is free.
