Alcorn State to name football coach next week

Alcorn State has released a list of four finalists for its head football coaching positon. The search committee tasked with finding a replacement for fired coach Cardell Jones, considered 31 applicants.

Alcorn State defensive coordinator Mario Kirksey, named interim head coach following Jones' firing is one of the four finalists. The others are Fayetteville State offensive coordinator Haney Catchings, Jr., Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive coordinator LaTraia Jones and Johnny Thomas, who has been out of coaching since 1989.

Search committee chairman Emanual Barnes stated that the four candidates had "distanced themselves from the pool . . . but not from each other." "We will interview the four and move forward", he said.

A news conference is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to announce the new coach.
