Coppin State College has named Britt King as the school's new head women's basketball coach. A native of Glenarden, MD, King comes to the Baltimore institution from the University of the District of Columbia where she served as head basketball coach and senior women's administrator.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to build a successful program," said King, whose Lady Firebird squad finished 14-11 last season before the school abolished its athletic program in a cost-cutting measure.
"My experience at UDC has helped give me the know-how and ability to take over a program at this level, and I'm looking forward to it," she stated.
In 1992, King took over a program at UDC that had been suspended due to a lack of eligible players the previous three seasons. Following a 4-18 mark her first year, King had four straight winning campaigns including a 20-6 record and berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament in her third season. She compiled a 64-57 record during her tenure at UDC.
King served as chairperson of the NCAA Division II East Region Basketball Committee this past year. She also worked as a coach during the 1994 Olympic Festival tryouts.
King becomes the fourth head coach in Coppin State history. She replaces Tori Harrison, who was recently hired as an assistant at Minnesota.
