Southern and Prairie View score in Division I Track & Field

Southern and Prairie View A&M Universities were the only black colleges to score points at this year's NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Held at Billy Hayes Track on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, the SWAC representatives got points in five men's events. No black college participants got points in the women's competition.

Southern showed its speed on the track with placements in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter hurdles and 4X400 meter relay. Prairie View scored a fifth place finish in the 800 meter run.

Southern's John George finished fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.41. Teammate Robert Bronston grabbed fifth place in the 400 meter hurdles (:49.63 ) while Kevin Jefferson got 8th place in the finals of the 200 meters with a time of 21.07.

The Jaguars' best finish of the day was third place in the 4X400 meter relay where George, Bronston and Jefferson joined Nakia Hogan to finish the metric mile in 3:02.61. Florida A&M qualified for the finals but finished ninth and didn't earn any points.

Prairie View's Dakari Lenear finished fifth in the 800M with a time of 1:47.60. The top five finishers broke the stadium record in the event

Southern finished 17th overall will 15 points. Prairie View was 53rd with 4. Arkansas won the men's championship with 55 points. Louisiana State edged Texas 63 to 62 for the women's title.
