
Strong showings in the long jump gave Morehouse and St. Augustine's men early points in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis.
The Morehouse duo of Kirkwood Newbold and Osbourne Moxey accumulated nine points in the only field event to hold a final on Friday at the RCA Dome. Newbold finished second with a long jump of 24 feet 3 1/2 inches (7.40m) while Moxey finished sixth, jumping 23' 4" (7.11m). St. Augustine's Lancelot Gooden finished third with a jump of 24' 2 1/4" (7.37m).
After two events, the Maroon Tigers and Falcons were sitting second and third in the team standings trailing Abilene Christian.
The meet wraps up Saturday with more points on the horizon for both St. Augustine's and Morehouse. St. Aug qualified three individuals in the 55 meter hurdles final (Deworski Odom, GAbriel Burnett & Rodrigues Pfister). Morehouse had Jacobi Jones qualify for the finals in the event.
The 55 meter dash final will include Odom and Burnett from St. Aug.
Jerome Young, St. Augustine's was the top qualifier in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 46.98 seconds. He will be joined in the final by teammate Daren Foster. N.C. Central's Albert Newkirk missed qualifying for the final by just .03 sec.
Morehouse will also send Momodou Drammen to the 800 meter run final.
In women's competition, St. Augustine's finished second, third and sixth in the long jump to take an early lead in team points. Nicole Irving, Dolette Black and Shamilla Symonette combined to accumulate 15 of a possible 31 points in the event and vault into the first day lead.
Looking ahead to final events on Saturday, in the 55 meter hurdles, the Lady Falcons qualified Maria Quinonez and Lisa Taylor. Virginia State will send Tanike Lawson into the final event. Quinonez was the second best qualifier at 8.12 seconds.
N.C. Central's Elisha Marshall was the top qualifier in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.96 sec. She will be joined by St. Augustine's Prisca Philip in the finals on Saturday.
In the women's 400 meter dash, Lincoln University's Tara Myrick qualified with a time of 56.93 sec.
