Although neither team scored points on the second day of competition, women's teams from St. Augustine's College and Lincoln University are well positoned to pick up points on the final day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Evansville, Illinois.
CIAA Champion St. Augustine's is currently sitting third in the overall standings, just six points out of first place. The Lady Falcon squad qualified participants in four of the five preliminary events held Friday giving them representation in seven of the 13 final events scheduled for Saturday.
The largest impact came in the 100 meter hurdles where St. Auq. qualified three women for the finals. Andrea Giscombe, Donnet Facey and Lisa Taylor had the second, third and fifth best qualifying times in the event. Giscomb has already won the long jump and qualified along with teammate Karen Constable for the 400 intermediate hurdle final Thursday. After missing the final field in the 200 meter dash by .02 seconds in Thursday's preliminaries, Prisca Phillips returned on Friday to qualify in both the 100 meter dash and 400 meter run. She is also expected to participate in either the 4X100 meter and/or 4X400 meter relay teams where St. Aug while be facing a small but strong squad from Lincoln University.
Lincoln only brought six women to the championships but they have gotten significant productivity from each one. Riding the back of Beverly Grant and Lorraine Graham, Lincoln hopes to equal or exceed its third place finish in the indoor championships this year.
Grant is the top qualifier in the 100M and second fastest in the 200m behind Graham. In addition to leading the qualifiers in the 200M, Graham was the fastest qualifier in the 400M. Both Lincoln's 4X100 and 4X400 relay teams were the fastest qualifiers for Saturday's finals.
The only black college performer to score Friday was N.C.Central's Kimberly McPhatter who finished tied for fifth in the high jump. McPhatter's best height was 1.72m (5' 7.75").
In men's events, Abilene Christion extended its lead as St. Augustine's, Virginia Union, Virginia State and Albany State got on the scoreboard.
Black college performers were shut out of the finals in the 800M and 110H. Alabama A&M's Wayde Payne and St. Aug's Daren Foster made the final field in the 400M. St. Aug's Ewart Scott and Williams Perry will join Lincoln's Dwight Ferfuson and Morris Brown's Roosevelt Blackmon in the finals of the 100M.
St. Augustine's also qualified its 4X400M relay team for the finals on Saturday.
