For the eighth time in the past ten years, the St. Augustine's mens outdoor track and field team has won an NCAA Division II National Championship.
Riding a record breaking performance by Jerome Young, the Falcons returned to the first place platform following a two year absence.
Young set a new meet record in the 400 meter dash, won the 200 meter dash and anchored the final leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay team. He also ran the second leg of the second place 4x100 meter relay team . . . all in one day.
Thunderstorms caused a two hour delay during Saturday's finals and St. Aug used the down time to its advantage. Entering the final day in fifth place and 31 points behind the second day leader Central Missouri State, St. Augustine's used strong performances by Young, Deworski Odom, Gabriel Burnett and Rodrigues Pfister to forge into the lead.
Odom finished second in the 110 meter hurdles, losing by .01 seconds, third in the 100 meter dash and anchored the 4x100 meter relay. Burnett finished third in the 110m hurdles, fourth in the 200m dash and ran the first leg of the 4x100m relay. Pfister finished second in the 400 meter hurdles, fifth in the 110 meter hurdles and ran the first leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay.
Morehouse College high jumper Gregory Roberts successfully defended his national title, beating Clark Atlanta University rival James Crowe. Roberts' winning leap of 2.21 meters fell short of last year's record setting 2.28m.
The St. Augustine's College women's team fell short in its attempt to defend its first-ever national championship. The Lady Falcons finished second overall to Abilene Christian.
St. Aug's Shenique Musgrove won the javelin with a throw of 152' 5".
N.C. Central's Elisha Marshall ended three years of frustration winning the 100 meter dash. In four previous attempts at an individual national title during her NCCU indoor and outdoor track career, Marshall finished with two third place and two second place performances. In her fifth attempt on Saturday, Marshall ran an 11.81 to earn recognition as the top women's 100m sprinter in the NCAA Division II.
Marshall also scored in the finals of the women's 200m dash, earning her sixth career All-America honor with a fourth place finish in a time of 24.28.
