Howard University's Denique Graves became the first, and only black college player, selected in Monday's WNBA Draft. The 6-3, senior was the second round pick of the Sacramento Monarchs and the 15th pick overall.
Graves just recently completed her career at Howard and joins Pam McGee (Southern Cal) Chantel Tremitiere (Auburn) and Tajama Abraham (George Washington) as initial draftees to the new squad.
The Monarchs are coached by former Cal-State-Hayward mentor, Mary Murphy. They were assigned Olympians Ruthie Bolton-Holifield and Bridgette Gordon in the initial phase of team development. The Monarchs will be affiliated with the NBA's San Diego Clippers.
