Gillette Awards $30,000 in Scholarships to HBCUs

Atlanta, GA - The Gillette Company has awarded $30,000 in scholarships recognizing African American students who excel both academically and athletically. The awards are part of a partnership between Gillette and the Historically Black Collegiate Coalition (HBCC) designed to increase public awareness of the rich potential of African American youth.

Ten student athletes attending historically black colleges and universities were named to the first Gillette/HBCC Scholar-Athlete Team. One male and one female each from the four HBCU athletic conferences; Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and a male and female from an at-large category were selected by a committee composed of a Gillette representative, college presidents and conference commissioners.

The 1998 Gillette/HBCC Scholar-Athlete selectees were:
Brandon Owens - Bowie State University (CIAA baseball)
Lisa Louis - St. Augustine's College (CIAA volleyball)
Dale Wayne Yarborough - Lane College (Independent basketball)
Tenesha Byrd - Benedict College (Independent volleyball)
Jerrell Moore - South Carolina State University - (MEAC football)
Keensha Parham - Bethune Cookman College - (MEAC volleyball)
Breion Jones - Morris Brown College - (SIAC football)
Mollie Williams - Kentucky State University (SIAC track)
Toris Derone Sumbler - Grambling State University (SWAC baseball)
Audie Key - Alcorn State University (SWAC volleyball)

A $3,000 scholarship will be donated by the HBCC on behalf of The Gillette Company to the general scholarship fund of each of the ten winner's institutions. The winners will be presented with a trophy.
