Southern University's Marino Casem To Receive Major Award

Southern University Athletic Director, Marino H. Casem has been selected to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award for 1998, as voted on by the Awards Committee and Board of Directors of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

The award is given annually to the person the committee believes truly has devoted themselves to athletics, in particular the game of college football.

In 26 years of coaching Casem compiled a 159-93-8 record while capturing seven SWAC titles. He has received seven SWAC Coach-of-the-Year awards to accompany seven Black College Coach-of-the-Year awards. For his outstanding efforts and achievement as a coach he was voted to the SWAC Hall of Fame, Alcorn State Hall of Honor and Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.

"It's a tremendous honor and humbling experience, knowing your peers recognize your work and love for the game, said Casem. " It brings great honor not to just me but to the University."

Past winners of this award include last year's recipient Jack Lengyl, Eddie Robinson, Bill Nichols, Bob Woodruff and Scotty Whitelaw.

Casem will be presented with the award at the Foundation's Annual Awards Luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City on Monday December 7, 1998.
