
DURHAM, NC -- Two former North Carolina Central University football widereceivers, Antoine Calloway and Monte' Southerland, have signed one-yearcontracts to play with the Carolina Twisters in the International Football League.
Based in Charleston, South Carolina, the Twisters kick off the 1998 seasonSaturday (July 25) at home against the Knoxville Crusaders.Calloway, a 6-2, 198-pound Charlotte native, finished his Eagle career as thethird all-time leading receiver in school history with 153 catches for 1,920yards and 17 touchdowns. As a senior in 1996, Calloway was named First TeamAll-CIAA, CoSIDA NCAA Division II All-South Region First Team, and FootballGazette All-America Third Team, while leading the Central IntercollegiateAthletic Association (CIAA) with 59 receptions for 765 yards and aconference-high 8 touchdowns.
Southerland, a 5-10, 165-pound native of Henderson, NC, earned the nickname"Flash" by utilizing his break-away speed as a wide receiver and returnspecialist. As a senior in 1996, Southerland averaged a team-best 32.4 yardsper catch and was the team's third-leading receiver with 21 receptions for 680yards and 4 touchdowns. During his record-breaking career, Southerland becameNCCU's No. 1 return specialist by tallying 2,433 kickoff return yards (26.2average) and 5 touchdowns.
The International Football League (IFL) consists of 31 teams. The CarolinaTwisters play in the South Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. Otherteams in the South Atlantic Division are the Augusta Silver Panthers, PalmettoState Dragons, Knoxville (TN) Crusaders, and Charlotte Stampede.
