Savannah State Receives Probation and Financial Aid Cuts

 April 6, 1998

Overland Park, KS - The NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions has placed Savannah State University on probation for four years and reduced the number of financial aid awards in six sports.

In addition, the school will forfeit all its wins in football, women's basketball and men's track and field for the 1993-94 through 1995-96 academic years.

Other penalties leveled by the committee include the loss of permissible financial aid awards in football, women's tennis, men's basketball and baseball for various periods through the 2000-2001 academic year, recertification of current athletics policies and practices and participation by specified individuals in an NCAA compliance seminar.

The committee found that Savannah State had violated NCAA rules by exceeding financial aid limits in football by at least 28, awarding excessive financial aid to 14 student-athletes, failing to maintain file records required by the NCAA and allowing a men's track and field athlete to participate while ineligible.

The committee found a "lack of institutional control" dating back to the 1993-94 academic year.

Because of the severity of the infractions, Savannah State is subject to the "death penalty" for a five year period beginning September 24, 1997.

Because the school agreed to participate in the investigative process and agreed to the findings of the violations reported., the university has waived the right to appeal.
