Virginia State University has picked Peggy Davis as its next head women's basketball coach. She succeeds Bertha Cummings, whose contract was not renewed.Davis comes to VSU from Angelo State University in San Angelo Texas, where she worked as head women's basketball coach and as an instructor in Kinesiology since 1990. She served as head women's basketball coach, head track coach, assistant volleyball coach and a physical education instructor at Howard Payne University from 1988-90. From 1986-87, she was assistant coach of the women's basketball and volleyball teams at Howard Payne. Davis was a student assistant for the women's basketball team from 1984-85.
A native of Bastrop, Texas, Davis has a bachelor of science degree in physical education and history from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas (1985) and a master's degree in education from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas (1987). She is completing work this summer on her Mid-Management Certificate in School Administration at Angelo State.
She is beginning the second year of a three-year term on the NCAA Division II Women's Basketbll committee and served as regional chairperson for the Division II South Central Regional Advisory committee last year.
Davis is married to Thomas Davis, plant manager at Hirschfield Steel Company. They are the parents of two daughters, Courtney, 7 and Taylor, 2.
Davis' contract is effective July 10 and her first day at VSU will be July 14.
