Virginia State fires Bertha Cummings

 April 23, 1997

Virginia State University has announced that it will not renew the contract of head women's basketball and softball coach Bertha Cummings.

In a press release announcing the action, VSU athletic director Alfreeda Goff said, "Upon an evaluation of the women's basketball and softball programs, I felt that we needed to move in a new direction and under new leadership."

Cummings, 38, took over the Trojanettes basketball program from Dr. Leon Bey during the 1987-88 season. VSU won the CIAA Women's Basketball championship in 1988 and again in 1990. Over eight seasons at the Petersburg, Virginia institution, she compiled a record of 156-83 (.653)

Prior to joining the VSU staff, Cummings was head women's basketball coach at the University of the District of Columbia from 1984-86 and led the team to a 29-21 record.
