Alexandria, Louisiana- The #4 seeded Edward Waters Lady Tigers ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday afternoon in the #3 seed & 25th ranked Drovers from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. EWC saw its historic 2017 season come to an end with a 14-0 defeat in their elimination game in the 2017 NAIA Softball National Tournament Opening Round-Alexandria Bracket at Generals Field on the campus of Louisiana State University-Alexandria.

ewc sb17The scoring happened early and often for USAO as they pushed four runs across in the top of the first inning, including a three-run homer off of EWC starter Yessenia Moreno. The senior pitcher was replaced in favor of freshman pitcher Alyssa Fonda after just 0.2 innings pitched. The Drovers added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning and seven more in the top of the seventh off of fellow freshman Gabrielle Williamson to virtually put the game out of reach.

USAO starting pitcher Tate Landmark carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh before giving up a hit to senior second baseman Tiffany Solomon. Landmark moved to 15-6 on the year with the complete game one-hitter, also striking out nine EWC batters. Moreno (9-11) was charged with the loss in her final appearance in a purple & orange uniform, giving up four hits and allowing four earned runs. Fonda pitched 5.1 innings for EWC, allowing 11 hits, seven earned runs, and one walk while Williamson finished the game for the Lady Tigers allowing four hits and two earned runs.

Edward Waters finished their memorable year with an overall record of 27-27 in the 2017 season. With the loss, EWC will say goodbye to six seniors who played their final contests today: Pitcher Yessenia Moreno, Catcher Taylor Solomon, Second Baseman Tiffany Solomon, Outfielder Aaliyah Thompkins, Outfielder Danielle Jennings, & Outfielder Tremia Holmes. Two juniors will also forgo their final season of eligibility as they will join the Police Academy: Pitcher Kali Barnhill & Outfielder Marissa Hernandez. These eight young ladies have been a part of the renaissance of Edward Waters softball and have laid a solid foundation for future Lady Tiger teams to build upon.
