WASHINGTON, DC--- Howard University's James "J-Byrd" Daniel, III is officially out for the remainder of the season. Daniel, a senior guard and last year's leading scorer in Division I basketball, suffered a severe high ankle sprain of his left ankle in the preseason, then played in the 14th and 15th game of the season against Florida A&M and Columbia before reinjuring it. He averaged 17.0 points in the two games and has not played since.
He is scheduled to undergo surgery and recovery time is projected at 4-6 weeks. Daniel averaged 27.1 points and led all players in scoring. The 5-11 senior guard from Hampton, Va. was named the 2015-16 MEAC Player of the Year and the preseason player of the year. Daniel is the all-time leading scorer in school history and holds several game, season and career records at Howard.
