Morehouse Claims Men's Title, Albany State's Women Reign Supreme at SIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

 April 19, 1997

Savannah, GA - Morehouse College used its depth in the distance races and got several strong performances in the field events to win its second consecutive Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor track and field championship on Saturday. The Maroon Tigers rolled up 250 points, easily outdistancing second place Alabama A&M, which finished in second place with 143 points.

Kareem Almo of Morehouse did the most damage for the Tigers, completing his sweep of the distance events by winning the 5,000 meter run on Saturday. Earlier in the competition, Almo won the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meter run, easily earning the award as the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet.

Albany State wrested the women's team title away from defending champion Clark Atlanta with a balanced team effort. The Lady Rams edged the Lady Panthers 200 to 163. ASU's Yolanda Smith shared the Most Outstanding Track Performer award with CAU's Latifah Johnson.
