Livingstone College Loses Starting Quarterback For The SeasonOctober 1, 2001
In the second quarter with a little over a minute remaining in the half, Livingstone College faced a second and 16 yards (before a first down) situation. Ward scrambled looking for a receiver to pass to and was sacked, by Virginia State's Dewayne Wilson, out-of-bounds resulting in the dislocation of his left hip.
Joel Ward was released from the Iredell Memorial Hospital Sunday afternoon. The dislocation was corrected non-surgically and no fractures of the bones were found. Ward is expected to return to campus the week of October 8th.
Joel won the top position in the third week of the season, thus starting three of the four games played. Ward leads the team in two statistical categories: Passing - 24 completions of 51 attempts for 299 yards and one touchdown - and Total Offense - 107 plays for 346 yards. Joel has credit for one passing and one rushing touchdown. His best game's performance was against Fayetteville State University. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 193 yards with one interception; threw one touchdown and was sacked only once; completed his longest pass for 74 yards; and rushed on 14 occasions for 20 yards.
