Southern Announces 2006 Football Schedule

BATON ROUGE -- The Southern University Department of Athletics
has announced their 2006 football schedule, as approved by
the Southern University Board of Supervisors.
Southern will open the season on September 2nd, when the Jaguars
host Southland Conference foe, Nicholls State. The Jags will
follow that game up with their SWAC home opener, hosting the
Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State on September 9th.
The next weekend, September 16th, will see the Jags invade
Houston, Texas, taking on the Panthers of Prairie View A&M.
The Southern Jaguars will then take to the friendly skies,
and travel all the way to San Francisco, California, to take
on the Virginia State Trojans in a west coast game. SU will
wrap up the month of September hosting the Hornets of Alabama
State on September 30th.
The entire month of October will find the Southern Jaguars
on the road, starting in the first weekend, October 7th, when
the Jags travel to Huntsville, AL, to take on the 2005 Eastern
Division champs, the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. October 14th,
the SU Jaguars make their much anticipated return to Jackson,
Mississippi to take on the Tigers of Jackson State University
in one of SU’s biggest rivalry games. SU will take on
Alcorn State, on the “reservation”, when the Jaguar
Nation invades Lorman, MS, on October 21st. SU will have their
first open date of the season on October 28th.
Southern will play host to the Tigers of Texas Southern University
on November 4th, and will follow that game up with their final
home game of the season, as the Department pays tribute to
its seniors on “Senior Day”, November 11th, as
the Jags host the Golden Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. SU will
round out the month of November with the XXXIII Annual State
Farm Bayou Classic.
The Southwestern Athletic Conference has also announced that
the SWAC Championship game will be played on December 9th,
2006 in Birmingham’s Legion Field.
