Shaw and Tuskgee fall in NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Regionals

Both men's and women's teams from Shaw and Tuskegee were shut out in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tennis Regionals.

Mid-Atlantic Women's Regional - First Round: Armstrong Atlantic State 6, Shaw 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. ­ The top-ranked and defending DII national champion Armstrong Atlantic State women's tennis squad began its title defense with a 6-0 victory over Shaw in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Savannah on Thursday morning.

AASU (26-0) dropped just one point in doubles play, sweeping all three matches, then picked up three singles wins to clinch the match. Senior Manuela Emmrich picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Victoria Enebechi at No. 3 singles, while senior Caroline Grage also picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Monique Lawson at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Sofia Haggstrom rounded out the AASU singles winners with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ronke Oyelade at No. 6 singles. The win stretched AASU's current win streak to 56 consecutive matches, while Shaw - the CIAA champion - ends its season at 17-3.

Mid-Atlantic Men's Regional - First Round: Armstrong Atlantic State 5, Shaw 0

SAVANNAH, Ga. ­ The No. 7-ranked Armstrong Atlantic men's tennis team picked up a 5-0 win over Shaw in the first round of the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Region in Savannah on Thursday afternoon, earning a berth in Friday's championship match.

The Pirates, who advanced to the NCAA DII semifinals last season, won all three doubles matches then got singles wins from senior David Secker and junior Taavo Roos. Roos defeated Olwaseyi Bamigbade at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Secker defeated Olayiwola Enitan, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. AASU improves to 17-6 on the season, while CIAA champion Shaw suffered its first loss of the campaign, finishing its season with a 17-1 mark.

Valdosta State coasted to a 5-0 win over Tuskegee in the opening round of the South Regional Thursday (May 4) at the VSU Tennis Complex.

The third ranked Blazers rolled past the Golden Tigers, who brought only four players and defaulted one doubles and two singles matches.
