Bailey comes to Howard from the University of Minnesota where he served as defensive line coach for the Gophers for the past two years.

Considered an excellent recruiter, he was a defensive line coach at Oklahoma State prior to joining the staff at Minnesota.

Before his arrival at Oklahoma State, Bailey was on the coaching staff at Middle Tennessee State, where he spent one season, but helped take the Blue Raider defensive line from last in the league in sacks to near the top.

Prior to his coaching stint at Middle Tennessee State, Bailey served five years as an assistant at Louisiana-Lafayette from 1998-2002. Before he joined the UL- Lafayette staff, Bailey was the defensive line coach at Virginia Military Institute from 1995-97.

A native of Morgantown, W.V., Bailey began his coaching career on the staff at West Virginia working with the defensive secondary when the Mountaineers won the Big East Conference title in 1993 and led the Big East in interceptions in 1994.

Bailey played collegiately at the University of Tennessee and was part of two Southeastern Conference championship teams. He was a four-year letterman from 1988-91 and led the team in tackle-for-loss and in quarterback sacks during his junior season. As a senior he was part of a Tennessee team that led the SEC in total defense.

He finished his collegiate career with 96 total tackles and 7.5 quarterback sacks and participated in four bowl games including the 1988 Peach Bowl, 1990 Cotton Bowl, 1991 Sugar Bowl and 1992 Fiesta Bowl.

Bailey earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Tennessee in 1992.

He and his wife, Angela, have one daughter, Evann Leigh.
