JCSU to Host 2007 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships
February 6, 2007
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – February 5, 2007 - Johnson C. Smith University has been awarded the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 24-26, 2007.
This will be the first time that JCSU has hosted a national championship event. JCSU has hosted regional competition in basketball (2001), and conference championships in 2003 and 2004.
“We are very excited to serve as the host for such a tremendous event,” said JCSU Athletics Director Stephen Joyner, Sr. “Our facility is ideal to host such an event and with the support of the Charlotte community, I am confident we can meet the challenge.”
The meet will bring to Charlotte more than 1,000 competitors and support staff at the end of May. The festivities will begin with a banquet on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, and will conclude with the majority of final events on Saturday, May 26, 2007.
The Irwin Belk Complex is considered by many as one of the top track venues in the nation, with its prime location sitting beautifully under the Charlotte skyline and right off the interstate. The stadium has been adopted by area middle and high schools as the scene of choice for their track events.
JCSU has served as the host for several national track meets - Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Summer Games, state-wide Special Olympics, and the 2005 USA Track and Field-Sectionals. In addition to the quality events mentioned previously, the Irwin Belk Complex has hosted the 2003 and 2004 CIAA Championships. In 2004, the JCSU women’s track and field team placed second in the conference championships and narrowly missed nationally qualifying in two events.
